Spotted
The Spotted Dove is a widespread and common dove native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, now also established in many other parts of the world through introductions. It is easily recognized by its distinctive black and white spotted neck patch.
Where to spot
Commonly found in parks, gardens, cultivated land, open woodlands, and urban areas across its native range and introduced populations (e.g., Australia, parts of North America).
How to spot
Look for its greyish-pink plumage, relatively long tail, and most importantly, the prominent black and white spotted patch on the hindneck and sides of the neck. Listen for its characteristic 'coo-coo-coo-croo' call.
When to spot
A year-round resident in most of its range. Most active during the day, particularly noticeable in the morning and late afternoon when foraging.

Its 'spotted' name comes from the unique patch on its hindneck, which is actually a mosaic of individual black feathers each tipped with a white spot, creating a checkered appearance.
