Where to spot
Endemic to Sulawesi and nearby islands in Indonesia. Found in a variety of forest types, including lowland and montane forests, forest edges, and disturbed scrubland, often in secondary growth.
How to spot
Look for its long tail, reddish-brown plumage, and the iridescent pinkish-purple and green sheen on the neck, which is more noticeable in good light. Listen for its typical cuckoo-dove calls, which are generally deep and mournful.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often foraging quietly among trees. More easily detected by call during early mornings, especially from within dense foliage.
Its plumage varies geographically across its range within Sulawesi, with some populations exhibiting more prominent iridescent purple and green on the neck compared to others.
