Spotted
The Ornate Fruit Dove truly lives up to its name with its striking pattern of emerald green, bright yellow, and purplish-chestnut plumage, particularly noted for its distinctive facial markings. It is a vibrant inhabitant of New Guinea's forests.
Where to spot
Native to New Guinea and its adjacent islands. It inhabits lowland and hill forests, including rainforests, often found at lower to mid-elevations.
How to spot
Look for its bright yellow facial markings and purplish-chestnut breast. Scan the canopy of fruiting trees. Though colorful, they can be shy and require patience for a good view. Binoculars are highly recommended.
When to spot
Can be found year-round within its range. Best observed during early mornings or late afternoons when foraging for fruit high in the canopy.
Its bold yellow facial markings and purplish breast are highly distinctive, making it one of the most uniquely patterned species among the fruit doves and easily recognizable when seen well.
