Spotted
The Picui Ground-Dove is a small, common dove found throughout much of South America. It is distinguished by its generally grayish plumage, black spots on its wing-coverts, and a pale eye-ring.
Where to spot
Widespread across South America, from southern Brazil and Bolivia south through Argentina and Chile. Found in a variety of open and semi-open habitats, including agricultural areas, shrublands, parks, and urban environments.
How to spot
Look for its small size, grayish overall tone, and distinct black spots on the wings. Listen intently for its namesake call to pinpoint its location, as they often feed on the ground in small flocks.
When to spot
Observable year-round within its extensive range. Most active during the day, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.

This species is known for its rather melodic, repetitive call, which sounds like 'pi-CUUU-i', giving it its common name.
