Spotted
The White-winged Dove is a medium-sized dove easily recognizable by the prominent white stripe on its wing, especially noticeable in flight. It is highly adaptable, thriving in both arid scrublands and urban environments.
Where to spot
Widespread from the southwestern United States through Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. Has expanded its range northward in recent decades.
How to spot
Look for it perched on wires, trees, or foraging on the ground in urban areas, agricultural fields, or desert scrub. The white wing patch is the most distinctive field mark, especially when flying. Listen for its distinctive "who-cooks-for-you" like call.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often observed foraging in groups during the morning and late afternoon. Calls are frequent, especially during warmer months.

Unlike many doves, the White-winged Dove relies heavily on the nectar of saguaro cacti for food and water during the breeding season in some parts of its range.
