Spotted
The White-capped Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus dupetithouarsii) is a large and distinctive fruit-dove endemic to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. It is easily identified by its prominent white cap, which contrasts sharply with its green body.
Where to spot
Found in humid tropical forests, from sea level to montane areas, across the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.
How to spot
Look for its striking white head contrasting with its green plumage. Listen for its deep, resonant hooting calls, which can carry through the forest.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen feeding in the forest canopy, particularly in the morning and late afternoon when fruits are abundant.
Its relatively large size and bold white cap make it a standout species among other fruit-doves found within its remote island range.
