Spotted
The Brown-headed Brown-Dove is a medium-sized, primarily arboreal dove with a distinctive dark brown head, contrasting with its otherwise olive-brown plumage. It is a secretive forest resident, often blending into the shadows.
Where to spot
Found in lowland and montane primary and mature secondary forests, typically foraging in the understory and mid-story. Look for it in areas with dense tree cover and abundant fruit, primarily in the Philippines.
How to spot
Listen carefully for its unique, deep calls. Scan for movement in the lower to mid-canopy, particularly near fruiting trees. Its camouflage requires keen observation skills and often a good pair of binoculars.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon when foraging. It is a resident species in its range and can be observed year-round.
This species is known for its particularly deep and resonant cooing call, which carries well through dense forest, often serving as the primary indicator of its presence before it is seen.
