Spotted
A medium-sized dove found in the montane forests of eastern Africa, the Dusky Turtle-Dove is characterized by its generally dark, dusky grey plumage, often with a subtle purplish sheen on the neck and breast. It is often seen foraging on the ground.
Where to spot
Eastern Africa, from Ethiopia south through Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and into Tanzania. Primarily found in montane forests, woodlands, and well-vegetated gardens at higher altitudes.
How to spot
Look for its dark plumage against the forest floor or perched in the lower canopy. Listen for its soft, mournful 'coo-coo-coo' call, which can be easily overlooked amidst other forest sounds. A quiet approach is best for observation.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, especially early mornings and late afternoons, when it forages quietly on the forest floor.

Unlike many of its close relatives, the Dusky Turtle-Dove is a specialist of higher altitudes, preferring the cooler, mist-shrouded montane forests of East Africa.
