Spotted
The Wompoo Fruit Dove is one of the largest and most spectacularly colored fruit doves, boasting rich purple, yellow, and green plumage. Its deep, resonant 'wom-POO' call is a characteristic sound of its rainforest habitat.
Where to spot
Found in New Guinea and eastern Australia. It inhabits tropical and subtropical rainforests, wet sclerophyll forests, and adjacent woodlands, typically in the upper canopy.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, booming call. Once located by sound, scan the canopy of fruiting trees. Its relatively large size and vibrant colors can make it noticeable, but it can still blend surprisingly well. Binoculars are essential for appreciating its full beauty.
When to spot
Active year-round throughout its range. It is most vocal and active in the early morning and late afternoon when feeding on a wide variety of rainforest fruits.

Its distinctive call, which gives it its common name, is a booming sound that can carry a significant distance through the dense rainforest, often alerting observers to its presence long before the bird is seen.
