Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests from Costa Rica through Panama to western Colombia, typically up to 1,500 meters elevation.
How to spot
Very shy and difficult to spot. Look for it walking quietly and deliberately on the forest floor, often in dense undergrowth. Listening for its soft, deep, and somewhat muffled cooing call is often the most reliable way to detect its presence.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, when it forages on the forest floor.
