The Magellanic Penguin is a medium-sized penguin found along the coasts of South America. It is recognized by its two black bands across the chest, distinguishing it from other banded penguins. These migratory birds form huge breeding colonies on coastal islands and remote areas.
Where to spot
Breeds along the coasts of Argentina, Chile, and the Falkland Islands. Migrates north during the austral winter to coasts of southern Brazil and Peru.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive two black bands across a white chest and belly, a black head with a white stripe from above the eye to the throat, and a black bill. Observe their large, bustling colonies, their waddling gait, and their efficient swimming. Many nature reserves offer protected viewing areas.
When to spot
Best observed during the austral spring and summer (September-March) when they are in their breeding colonies. During the austral winter (April-August), they disperse at sea and along the northern coasts of their range. Easily viewed at accessible colonies.

Magellanic Penguins are named after Ferdinand Magellan, who first sighted them in 1520 during his circumnavigation of the globe.
