Spotted
One of the heaviest flying birds in the world, the Great Bustard is a large, majestic ground-dwelling bird of open grasslands. Males are significantly larger than females.
Where to spot
Extensive open grasslands, steppes, and agricultural plains across Europe and Asia.
How to spot
Seek out large, undisturbed open areas. They are very shy and wary, so long-distance observation with binoculars or a scope is often necessary. Look for their large size and stately, deliberate walk on the ground.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed during the breeding season (spring) when males are displaying, typically in early mornings.

Male Great Bustards perform an impressive courtship display where they invert their wing and tail feathers to reveal bright white underparts, making them resemble large 'foam balls' to attract females.
