Spotted
The Denham's Bustard is a large and impressive bustard species widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. It prefers open grasslands, savannas, and cultivated fields, where it forages for insects and plant matter.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to South Africa. It typically inhabits open grasslands, cultivated areas, savannas, and sparsely wooded areas.
How to spot
Scan wide, open, flat areas, often near water sources or in areas with short grass. They can be quite shy and difficult to approach, so observation from a vehicle, using binoculars or a spotting scope, is often the most effective method.
When to spot
A year-round resident throughout its range. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon. The breeding season varies regionally but often coincides with the onset of the rainy season.

Male Denham's Bustards perform an elaborate courtship display, inflating their throat and neck feathers to create a large, striking white 'balloon' or 'bubble' to attract females, often accompanied by booming calls.
