Spotted
The Red-crested Bustard is a widely distributed African bustard, identifiable by the male's striking red crest, which becomes erect during display. These birds are typically solitary or found in pairs.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, favoring dry grasslands, open woodlands, and savannas, particularly areas with scattered trees and bushes.
How to spot
Look for them walking slowly and deliberately through open areas. Their excellent camouflage can make them hard to spot when stationary. Listen for the male's booming call during the breeding season, which can carry a significant distance.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly in the cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon. Males are most visible during their breeding displays, often at dawn.
