Spotted
The Buff-crested Bustard is a striking bustard species with a distinctive buff crest, found in East African savannas. It is known for its rather upright posture and deliberate gait.
Where to spot
Primarily found in East Africa, including countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, inhabiting dry savannas, shrublands, and open woodlands.
How to spot
Scan open grassy and bushy areas. Listen for their characteristic call, a deep 'kwaa-kwaa' sound, which often reveals their presence. They can be quite shy, so approach cautiously.
When to spot
Most easily observed in the early morning and late afternoon when they are actively foraging. Their courtship displays are also a good time to spot them.

The 'buff crest' from which it gets its name is a prominent feature during courtship, with males raising these feathers to impress females.
