Spotted by
The Pygmy Cormorant is a distinctively small and slender cormorant, compact with a relatively long tail. It prefers freshwater habitats and dense vegetation, being less reliant on open water than its larger relatives.
Where to spot
Predominantly found in southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, inhabiting well-vegetated wetlands, lakes, slow-flowing rivers, and deltas.
How to spot
Look for its small size, greenish-black glossy plumage (especially vibrant in breeding season), and long tail. It swims low in the water and often perches on branches or snags near the water's edge. Distinguish it from larger cormorants by its diminutive stature.
When to spot
Year-round resident in much of its range, though northern populations may undertake short migratory movements in winter. Most active during daylight hours when foraging.

Unlike most cormorants, which are primarily aquatic, the Pygmy Cormorant is more arboreal, often perching in trees near the water and even occasionally foraging amongst lakeside vegetation.
