The Garden Warbler is a rather plain-looking, olive-brown warbler that lacks distinctive plumage features, making it challenging to identify visually. However, its rich, fast, and rambling song, a continuous outpouring of musical notes, is its most reliable identification clue. It prefers dense, leafy vegetation.
Where to spot
Breeds across most of Europe and into Western Asia. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Inhabits dense deciduous woodlands, scrub, hedges, and large gardens with thick cover.
How to spot
Focus on its song: a rapid, continuous, unpatterned warble that sounds like a sustained gurgle of musical notes. Visually, it's a drab, unstreaked olive-brown bird. Look for it foraging actively within the dense foliage of bushes and trees, often staying hidden.
When to spot
Most detectable during the breeding season (May-July) when males are singing. Migrants can be seen during spring (April-May) and autumn (August-September) passage.

Despite its common name, the Garden Warbler is not exclusively found in gardens; it often prefers dense, undisturbed scrub and deciduous woodlands where its subtle plumage provides excellent camouflage.
