Spotted
The Brown Goshawk is a widespread and adaptable medium-sized raptor found across Australia and surrounding islands. It is a skilled hunter, often found in a variety of wooded habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread across Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea, and various Pacific islands. It inhabits forests, woodlands, open country with scattered trees, and urban areas.
How to spot
Look for its characteristic long, banded tail and relatively short, rounded wings in flight. Often hunts by flying low through vegetation or ambushing from a concealed perch. Listen for calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen hunting in the early morning and late afternoon. Observable year-round in its resident range.
Females of the Brown Goshawk are noticeably larger than males, a common adaptation in raptors that allows the pair to hunt a broader range of prey sizes and reduce competition.
