Wahlberg's Eagle is a medium-sized raptor found across sub-Saharan Africa, known for its variable plumage (light and dark morphs) and relatively small head with a short crest. It is a versatile predator of small mammals, birds, and reptiles.
Where to spot
Woodlands, savannas, and forest edges across sub-Saharan Africa. It avoids dense rainforests and true deserts.
How to spot
Look for its medium size, overall brown plumage (dark or light morph), relatively small head with a short crest, and distinct pale flight feather bases in some morphs. Often seen soaring or perched prominently on trees or poles.
When to spot
Year-round in resident areas, but many populations are migratory, arriving during the wet season. Active during daylight.
