Spotted
The Booted Eagle is a small but powerful eagle, notable for its 'booted' legs (feathers extending down to the toes). It occurs in two distinct morphs, light and dark, adding to its identification challenge. This agile hunter preys on small birds and mammals.
Where to spot
Breeds across southern Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia, preferring open woodlands, hillsides, and rocky areas. Migratory populations spend winter in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, often found in savannahs and dry forests.
How to spot
Look for its relatively small size for an eagle. Identify light morphs by pale body and dark flight feathers, and dark morphs by overall dark brown plumage. In flight, wings are often held flat, and it has a long tail and distinctive 'finger' primaries. Watch for its energetic hunting flights.
When to spot
Best seen during breeding season from late spring to late summer in its Eurasian range. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) are key times for observing migratory movements.

Despite being one of the smallest eagles, the Booted Eagle is a fierce predator capable of taking prey larger than itself. Its 'booted' legs are a shared characteristic with some larger eagle species.
