Swainson's Hawk is a long-distance migratory raptor known for its epic annual journey between North and South America. It is a slim-bodied hawk with long, pointed wings.
Where to spot
Breeds across western North America, migrating through Central America, and wintering in grasslands of South America, particularly Argentina.
How to spot
Look for its relatively slim body, long pointed wings, and often a pale chest with a darker 'bib' on light morphs. In flight, its wings are often held in a slight dihedral. Listen for its creaky, Kestrel-like call.
When to spot
Best observed during spring (April-May) and especially autumn (September-October) migration, when large numbers gather in 'kettles.' On breeding grounds, look for them during summer.
