The Great Black Hawk is a large, imposing raptor of the Neotropics, entirely black in plumage with a distinctive broad white band on its tail. It is a powerful predator of forests and open woodlands.
Where to spot
Widespread from Mexico through Central and South America to northern Argentina. It inhabits tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, savannas, and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its uniform black plumage and the prominent white band on its tail. It often perches prominently or soars on broad wings. Listen for its loud, resonant calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen perched conspicuously on tall trees or soaring high. Most vocal in the morning and late afternoon. Observable year-round.
