Spotted
The Blue Ground-Dove is a small, striking dove characterized by the male's iridescent blue plumage and the female's brown coloration with dark wing spots. It is a shy, often solitary bird of humid forests.
Where to spot
Distributed from southern Mexico through Central America and much of South America, east of the Andes. Inhabits humid lowland and foothill evergreen forests, often in dense undergrowth.
How to spot
Look for it walking quietly on the forest floor or perched low in dense vegetation. Patience is key due to its shy nature. Listen for its soft, low 'whoo-hoo' call to help locate it in the dense foliage.
When to spot
Year-round resident within its extensive range. Most active during early morning and late afternoon when foraging.

Unlike many ground doves that forage in open areas, the Blue Ground-Dove prefers the dense understory of humid forests, making it more challenging to spot.
