Spotted
The Blackish Tapaculo is a somber-colored tapaculo, often appearing dark grey to blackish overall. It is a highly secretive bird, preferring to skulk in the dense undergrowth of cloud forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane and cloud forests across a wide range in the Andes, from Venezuela south through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often mechanical-sounding vocalizations. Observe very dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets, especially along forest edges or ravines. Patience is key, as visual sightings are often fleeting.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk, when its calls are more frequently heard. Can be present throughout the day.

Like many tapaculos, the Blackish Tapaculo uses its strong legs and feet to hop and run through vegetation on the forest floor, rather than flying much.
