Spotted
The Brown-rumped Tapaculo is a small, dark bird named for its brownish rump, which contrasts subtly with its otherwise dark plumage. It is a shy inhabitant of dense, humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests and cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes, primarily in Colombia.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often rattling or churring calls, which are the primary way to locate it. Scan the low, tangled undergrowth, especially near streams or in damp areas, for fleeting views.
When to spot
Active year-round. Vocalizations are most commonly heard in the early morning and late afternoon.

Its 'brown rump' is one of the few distinguishing visual features among the generally uniform tapaculos, though it requires a good view in often challenging light conditions.
