Spotted
Spillmann's Tapaculo is a small, dark, and highly secretive bird endemic to the high-altitude montane forests. It is one of the more widespread tapaculos in its range, yet still challenging to observe visually.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid montane forests and cloud forests along the slopes of the Andes, from Colombia south to northern Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, often mechanical or churring, vocalizations. Patiently scan the dense, low undergrowth, especially near ravines or streams, where it forages on the forest floor.
When to spot
Active year-round, with calls most frequent during the breeding season, particularly at dawn and dusk.
This tapaculo often responds well to playback of its calls, though care should be taken not to disturb the bird excessively.
