Spotted
The Chocó Tapaculo is a small, dark, and highly secretive bird named for its distribution in the biodiverse Chocó region. It typically forages in the dense, humid undergrowth of wet forests.
Where to spot
Found in the humid evergreen forests of the Chocó biogeographic region, spanning parts of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador.
How to spot
Its loud, distinctive vocalizations are the best way to detect this species. Patiently scan the shadowy understory, especially within dense thickets or along stream banks, for brief glimpses as it moves quickly.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but most vocal and therefore most detectable in the early morning and late afternoon.
