Spotted
A large, dark tapaculo easily identified by its black throat and robust build. It is a powerful ground-dweller of dense temperate forests in southern South America.
Where to spot
Found in the humid temperate forests and bamboo thickets of southern Chile and southwestern Argentina. It prefers dense forest floor habitats.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, hooting, and often explosive calls. It is extremely shy and difficult to see; focus on detecting it by sound and then waiting patiently near the source in dense cover.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but most vocal and therefore easiest to locate during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round.

Like its Chestnut-throated relative, its 'Huet-huet' call is a characteristic sound of the cool, damp forests it inhabits. It has remarkably powerful legs for navigating dense undergrowth.
