Spotted
The Caracas Tapaculo is a small, secretive bird found in the undergrowth of montane forests. Its plumage is typically dark, allowing it to blend into its shadowy environment.
Where to spot
Endemic to the coastal mountain ranges of northern Venezuela, inhabiting humid montane forests and cloud forests.
How to spot
Listen for its unique, often rapid-fire vocalizations. Scan the dense, low vegetation, particularly in ravines or along steep slopes, for brief glimpses as it hops on the ground.
When to spot
Active throughout the year, with vocalizations most frequent in the early morning and late afternoon, especially during the breeding season.
Despite its name, which suggests a proximity to the city of Caracas, its habitat is in the surrounding montane forests, away from urban areas.
