Spotted
A rather uniformly dark, inconspicuous tapaculo endemic to the temperate forests of southern Chile. It is a secretive ground-dweller, often only detected by its calls.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid temperate forests and dense bamboo thickets of central and southern Chile. It prefers dense understory near water.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, often mechanical, vocalizations. It is extremely shy and difficult to see; focus on detecting it by sound and then waiting patiently near the source in dense cover, especially near stream banks.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its specific forest habitat.

Its common name 'Dusky' aptly describes its overall dark plumage, which provides excellent camouflage in the shadowy undergrowth of its temperate forest habitat.
