Spotted
The Anambra Waxbill is a highly localized and endangered finch endemic to Nigeria. It is a small, pale waxbill with a grey head, brown back, and finely barred underparts, resembling other waxbills.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very small area in southern Nigeria, specifically in grasslands and scrub bordering swamps and marshes.
How to spot
Requires extensive effort and local knowledge. Look for it in dense marshy grasslands. Distinguishing it from other waxbills requires very careful observation of subtle plumage details.
When to spot
Year-round, but exceptionally difficult to find due to its rarity and restricted habitat. Best chances might be during the dry season.
This critically endangered species is known from only a few localities and faces significant habitat loss, making it one of Africa's most threatened birds.
