Spotted
The Red-billed Quailfinch is a small, shy finch found in the dry grasslands and savannas of East Africa. It is characterized by its bright red bill and generally paler, sandier plumage than its relatives.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid grasslands and savannas of East Africa, including Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
How to spot
Look for it on the ground or in low vegetation in open, dry habitats. The bright red bill is the key distinguishing feature. It often flushes and quickly drops back into cover.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed after good rainfall when grass seeds are abundant.
Despite its shy nature, the Red-billed Quailfinch often forages in small groups, making it slightly easier to spot when a flock is present.
