Spotted
The Black-bellied Seedcracker is a distinctive finch found in the forests and swampy areas of Central Africa. Males have a bright red head and rump, contrasting with a black belly, and a massive bill.
Where to spot
Found in lowland rainforests, swamp forests, and dense secondary growth in Central Africa, including Cameroon, Gabon, and DR Congo.
How to spot
Look for it on the ground or in low vegetation in dense, damp areas. The combination of a red head/rump, black belly, and enormous bill is diagnostic.
When to spot
Year-round, but often secretive and hard to spot. Best chances are early morning or late afternoon.
The extreme bill size of some seedcrackers is an evolutionary adaptation to allow them to exploit very hard-shelled seeds as a primary food source.
