Spotted
The White-rumped Snowfinch is a distinctive snowfinch species found in the high mountains and arid plateaus of Central Asia. It is named for its prominent white rump, visible in flight.
Where to spot
High-altitude regions of Central Asia, including Tibet, China, Mongolia, and parts of Russia. Inhabits alpine grasslands, stony steppes, and rocky slopes at high elevations.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive white rump, especially as it flies away or lands. It forages on the ground, often in small flocks. Listen for its characteristic calls in the open mountain environment.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the breeding season (spring/summer) when it is more active.
This species is known to construct its nests in burrows, rock crevices, or even marmot burrows, providing insulation against the harsh mountain climate.
