Where to spot
East Africa, primarily found in Ethiopia, Somalia, and northern Kenya. Inhabits arid and semi-arid acacia bushland and dry savanna.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive large, heavy bill, which is the primary identification feature. Often seen foraging on the ground or in low bushes. Its calls are typical sparrow chirps but may have a slightly different quality due to the bill.

Its exceptionally large bill, relative to its body size, is a key adaptation for its diet, allowing it to exploit tough seed sources unavailable to other sparrows.
