Spotted
The Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Passer montanus, is a small passerine bird in the sparrow family Passeridae, widely distributed across temperate Eurasia. Known for its distinctive facial markings and preference for rural and semi-urban habitats, it is a common and observable species that can often be found in close proximity to human settlements.
Where to spot
This species thrives in a variety of open and semi-open habitats, including agricultural areas, orchards, gardens, parks, and the edges of woodlands. They are particularly common in rural areas and can be found near farm buildings, villages, and towns, often avoiding dense urban centers where House Sparrows might dominate. Look for them in areas with suitable nesting cavities, such as tree holes or building crevices.
How to spot
Eurasian Tree Sparrows are typically active and social birds. You can spot them foraging on the ground for seeds or insects, often in small flocks, especially outside the breeding season. Listen for their characteristic calls, which include a sharp 'chip' or 'chup', a chattering 'teck-teck-teck', and a distinctive 'twee-eet' song, often given from a perch. Their flight is typically direct and strong, with rapid wing beats. They are generally less wary than some other small birds, allowing for relatively close observation.
When to spot
These sparrows are diurnal, meaning they are most active during daylight hours, particularly in the mornings and late afternoons. As largely resident birds throughout their range, they can be observed year-round. Their social behavior increases in the non-breeding season when they form larger foraging flocks. Breeding activity is most intense from spring through summer.

Unlike the House Sparrow, both male and female Eurasian Tree Sparrows have identical plumage, making them one of the few sparrow species where sexes are visually indistinguishable.
