The Chestnut Sparrow is a beautiful and distinctive sparrow found across parts of East and Central Africa. Males are almost entirely a rich chestnut color, making them easily identifiable.
Where to spot
Central and East Africa, from Sudan and Ethiopia south to Tanzania. Inhabits dry savannas, acacia and bushveld, often near water sources and human habitation.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable with their entirely chestnut plumage (except for black on wings and tail). Look for them in large flocks, especially during the breeding season, when their colonies are a remarkable sight.

Year-round resident, but often undergoes local movements depending on food and water availability. Breeding colonies are active during the wet season.
