Southern Africa, including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Angola. Inhabits arid and semi-arid savannas, thornveld, and dry woodlands.
How to spot
Look for its larger size and distinct head pattern, including a prominent white supercilium and dark crown in males. Often found in pairs or small groups, foraging on the ground near thorny bushes or trees.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the cooler parts of the day when active, often seen foraging on the ground.
