Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid steppes and grasslands of Mongolia and northern China, often in areas with sparse vegetation and rocky outcrops.
How to spot
Look for this bird walking or running on the ground in open areas. Its sandy plumage provides good camouflage. Can be quite elusive. Listen for its distinctive calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during spring and summer when breeding and more active.

Despite its 'jay' common name, it is actually a snowfinch (Passeridae family) and not related to the Corvidae family (true jays). Its behavior is more reminiscent of a lark or a pipit.
