Known from scattered locations across northern and western South America, including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Often observed over humid montane forests.
How to spot
Identifying the Cryptic Swift is extremely challenging due to its similarity to other dark swifts. Look for a large, uniformly dark swift, and try to note any subtle differences in size or flight pattern from co-occurring species.
