Chapman's Swift (*Chaetura chapmani*) is a robust and highly aerial swift found in northern South America. It is characterized by its powerful, direct flight and uniform dark plumage.
Where to spot
Tropical lowlands of northern South America, including parts of Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and northern Brazil.
How to spot
Scan the skies high above rainforests, savannas, and clearings. Look for its large size relative to other *Chaetura* swifts and its strong, purposeful flight, often in small groups.
When to spot
Year-round in its resident range. Most active during daylight hours, often seen during the heat of the day.

Despite its somewhat secretive nature, Chapman's Swift is a superb flier, spending almost its entire day on the wing foraging for insects high above the canopy.
