Spotted
The Himalayan Swiftlet is a widespread aerial insectivore found across mountainous regions of Asia. These swiftlets are masters of flight, spending almost their entire lives soaring and foraging in the air.
Where to spot
Found in the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, from northern India east to southern China and Vietnam. They inhabit montane forests, cliffs, and valleys, often near human settlements.
How to spot
Look for flocks of swift-flying birds over mountain valleys, forested slopes, or near cliffs where they may roost or nest. Their flight is rapid and direct. Pay attention to their calls and overall dark plumage.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, frequently seen from dawn till dusk. They may be observed year-round in some parts of their range, with some populations undertaking altitudinal migrations.
Like many of its close relatives, the Himalayan Swiftlet is one of the few bird species known to use echolocation, producing clicking sounds to navigate in the dark interiors of caves.
