The Uniform Swiftlet is a widespread and common swiftlet species found across numerous islands in the Pacific. It is a medium-sized bird with a relatively uniform dark plumage, giving it its name, and is a skilled aerial hunter.
Where to spot
Distributed across a vast range from parts of Southeast Asia (e.g., Indonesia, Philippines) east through New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu to Fiji and Samoa. It inhabits forests, coastal areas, and often forages over open country.
How to spot
Look for swiftlets with a uniform dark appearance, lacking distinct pale patches. They are often seen in flocks, flying erratically as they catch insects. Their echolocating clicks might be audible near cave entrances.
When to spot
Present year-round, active throughout daylight hours. Large numbers can be seen congregating at dawn and dusk around their roosting sites.
