Spotted
The Whiskered Pitta is a striking and elusive ground-dwelling bird known for its brilliant plumage, including a dark head with pale 'whiskers' and a bright red belly. It is endemic to the Philippines.
Where to spot
Primary and mature secondary lowland rainforests, particularly in the undergrowth with thick leaf litter, on the island of Luzon in the northern Philippines.
How to spot
Pittas are notoriously shy. Look for movement on the forest floor. Listen for its distinctive, mournful whistled calls, which are the best way to locate it. Patience and quiet approach are crucial.
When to spot
Year-round, but often easier to hear than see. Most vocal during the breeding season (typically April-July).
The Whiskered Pitta is named for the distinctive pale streaks, resembling whiskers, on its otherwise dark face.
