The Papuan Pitta is a colorful ground-dwelling bird characterized by a black head with a distinctive blue crown, a green back, and a vibrant red belly. It is found in New Guinea.
Where to spot
Lowland humid forests, including primary and mature secondary forests, in New Guinea and some surrounding islands.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic clear, whistled calls. Look for it foraging on the forest floor, often flicking leaf litter aside. Patience is essential.
When to spot
Year-round, but most vocal during the breeding season. Active during daylight hours.
The Papuan Pitta is named after Heinrich Christian Macklot, a German naturalist. Its blue crown is a key diagnostic feature.
