Spotted
The Bornean Banded Pitta is an iridescent gem of the Bornean rainforests, known for its dazzling blue, green, and black plumage accented with rufous. It is a secretive forest-floor dwelling bird.
Where to spot
Primary and secondary lowland to lower montane rainforests, particularly in areas with dense undergrowth and damp soil, endemic to Borneo.
How to spot
Its presence is often revealed by its loud, clear whistling calls. Maintain silence and patience, carefully watching the leaf litter and shaded areas of the forest floor. A local expert's guidance is beneficial.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active at dawn and dusk. The breeding season (often tied to the wet season) offers better chances of hearing and seeing vocal males.
Previously considered a subspecies of the Banded Pitta, genetic studies have now recognized the Bornean form as a distinct species, highlighting the island's unique biodiversity.
