The New Ireland Pitta is a beautiful pitta species with a striking red belly, blue upperparts, and a distinctive black head. It is endemic to New Ireland island.
Where to spot
Lowland primary and mature secondary forests, particularly in the undergrowth, on the island of New Ireland in the Bismarck Archipelago.
How to spot
As a shy ground-dweller, focus on listening for its distinctive calls from the forest floor. Remaining quiet and still for extended periods increases the chance of a sighting.
When to spot
Year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season. Active during daylight hours.
This species is part of the 'Red-bellied Pitta' complex and was recently elevated to full species status.
