Spotted
The Rusty-naped Pitta is a large and robust pitta species characterized by its distinctive rufous patch on the nape and subtle green and blue plumage. It is a denizen of dense, damp evergreen forests.
Where to spot
Moist evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, often in hilly or mountainous terrain, across Southeast Asia, including parts of Indochina and southern China.
How to spot
Its presence is often detected by its loud, clear whistle or hooting call. Observe quietly from a distance, focusing on disturbed leaf litter where it might be foraging. Patience is essential.
When to spot
Year-round within its resident range. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, particularly during the breeding season.

Like many pittas, the Rusty-naped Pitta is highly terrestrial, spending most of its time foraging for invertebrates on the forest floor, where its cryptic coloration helps it blend in.
