Spotted
The Rainbow Pitta is a stunningly colorful bird, endemic to the tropical forests of northern Australia. It boasts a kaleidoscope of green, blue, red, and black, making it one of Australia's most beautiful avians.
Where to spot
Tropical rainforests, monsoon forests, and dense vine thickets in northern Australia, particularly the Top End of the Northern Territory and parts of northern Queensland.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear 'walk-to-work' or 'tchee-wip' call. Patiently scan the forest floor and low vegetation. They can be found near water sources or fruiting trees. Insect repellent is often useful in its habitat.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal and active during the wet season (October-April), which is also its breeding season. Best observed at dawn and dusk.
