The Bismarck Pitta is a vibrant pitta species with a striking red belly, blue and green upperparts, and a black head. It is endemic to the Bismarck Archipelago.
Where to spot
Lowland primary and mature secondary forests, particularly in areas with dense undergrowth, on various islands of the Bismarck Archipelago (e.g., New Britain, New Ireland, Umboi).
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic calls, often a repeated whistle. Remain still and scan the forest floor for subtle movements. They are notoriously difficult to spot.
When to spot
Year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (typically October-February). Active during daylight hours.
The Bismarck Pitta is known for its secretive nature, spending most of its time foraging silently on the forest floor.
